Buffalo, New York – Michael Horning, Jr., Executive Vice President of PLS 3rd Learning, has been named the 2018 Friend of THE COUNCIL Award recipient by the New York State Council of School Superintendents (THE COUNCIL). The award, which recognizes a non-member’s contribution to THE COUNCIL and the field of education, will be presented to Horning at the 2018 Winter Institute Opening Session in Albany, NY on Sunday March 4, 2018.

Since co-founding PLS 3rd Learning as a spin-off from SUNY University at Buffalo in 2007, Horning has worked on impactful projects in education locally, nationally, and internationally while being a featured speaker at numerous educational conferences. Horning is also co-creator of SuperEval, which facilitates online school leadership evaluations that advance district and building goals through an evidence-based collaborative process.

Initiated in 1996, the Friend of THE COUNCIL Award is given annually to a person who is actively involved in education and active with THE COUNCIL. Award recipients must also be recognized by superintendents as a person who contributes time for the purpose of improving public education.

“Michael is always there for us at THE COUNCIL,” said Dr. Charles Dedrick, Executive Director, THE COUNCIL. “Whenever we need him to write an article or do a presentation, he seems to always find the time. His most important work with us has been centered around improving the superintendent evaluation process. Through his work on SuperEval, Michael created what has become a true service for our members; an evaluation process that is both easy to use and allows for the inclusion of evidence-based material.”

2018 Friend of THE COUNCIL Award recipient Michael Horning, Jr., said, “I am sincerely flattered to be recognized with such a prestigious honor and graciously accept this award on behalf of our entire organization. THE COUNCIL’s mission and work is important and purposeful, making it very easy to support as both an advocate and friend.”

Previous Friends of THE COUNCIL Award recipients from Western New York include Chancellor Emeritus, Mr. Robert Bennett (2007) and Dr. Robert Heller (1999), who served as the Western New York Educational Service Council Executive Director while also serving as a professor emeritus in the SUNY University at Buffalo’s Graduate School of Education.
